Medicare Advantage Plans
With a Medicare Advantage Plan, you will receive coverage for all services that Original Medicare covers except hospice care. In all types of Medicare Advantage Plans, you're always covered for emergency and urgent care. Medicare Advantage Plans offer emergency coverage outside of the plan's service area. Many Medicare Advantage Plans also offer extra benefits such as dental care, eyeglasses, or wellness programs.
Through most Medicare Advantage Plans, you can also receive prescription drug coverage.
Medicare Supplement Plans
The Medicare Supplement Plans can help pay some of the health care costs the Original Medicare doesn't cover, like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Some policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare doesn't cover, like medical care when you travel outside of the U.S. If you have Original Medicare and buy a Medicare Supplement Plan, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered health care costs. Then your Supplement policy pays its share.
The difference between the Medicare Supplement Plan and the Medicare Advantage Plan is that the Supplement policies only supplement your Original Medicare Benefits.
Part D Drug Plans
Everyone who has Medicare is offered prescription drug coverage. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can get this coverage through a plan that includes drug benefits, also known as a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plan. Medicare Part D Drug Plans adds prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare.
Dental Plans
Though Original Medicare typically does not include routine dental coverage such as dental exams, cleanings, fillings, crowns, and bridges there are some exceptions. Dental coverage can be available at low, or sometimes no, cost to Medicare-eligible Medicare Advantage policyholders. Dental plan members can choose from a large network of qualified providers. Some plans are flexible to the extent that you may choose any provider.
